Fishing reel sizes

Read the markings on a real reel, then see why the same number can mean different reels.

A spinning-reel size number such as 1000, 2500 or 4000 ranks the reel within its maker’s range: a higher number is a larger reel in that range. It is not a shared diameter or capacity, so compare two reels by their printed line capacity, weight and dimensions.1 2 3

A size name, not a measurement

2000 identifies a size class in this reel range. The number does not give a universal diameter or capacity.1 2 3

Read the two numbers together

This marking pairs 0.20-millimetre line with 200 metres. It is the figure printed on this example, not a capacity measured by this site. Check the specified line material as well.3 4

Count turns, not metres

On this spinning-reel example, the marked ratio means 5.2 rotor turns for one full handle turn. The length of line recovered also depends on the diameter of the line around the spool.1 5 6 7 8

Printed figures explain the label. They are not an independent capacity test.

These are size classes, not measurements. A matching number is a reason to compare specifications, not proof of identical reels.1 2 3

What do reel size numbers mean?

A spinning-reel size number ranks the reel within its maker’s range, so a higher number is a larger reel in that range.1 2 The number is not a measurement shared between makers: two reels with the same number from different makers need not match, and a maker can renumber its own range.

Compare like with like

A capacity figure only makes sense with the line specification and units printed beside it.3 Start with the line you plan to use, then read the capacity marking for that material and diameter. Metres and yards, or diameter and breaking-strength labels, can’t be swapped between columns.

Size, capacity and line per turn

A size number places the reel in its maker’s range, and capacity tells you how much of a stated line fits. Line recovered per turn depends on the gear ratio and the diameter of the line pack.1 7 Each answers a different question, so compare all three on the reels you are choosing between; the gear ratio guide works through the last one.

Questions people ask

What does a 2500 reel size tell me?: It identifies a size class in that reel range. It does not, by itself, tell you a precise spool diameter or how much of your line will fit.1 2 3
Can I compare capacity figures for different lines?: Only with the line type, diameter and units in view. Two lines with the same breaking-strength label can be different diameters, so their packed capacities need not match.3
Are reel sizes the same between makers?: No. A size number ranks a reel within its own maker’s range, makers number their ranges differently, and a maker can renumber its own.1 2
Do baitcasters use the same size numbers?: Baitcasting reels come in their own set of sizes that hold different amounts of line. Compare the printed line capacity rather than the number.3 6
