Action is where along the blank the bend concentrates: a fast action bends near the tip, a slow action further down toward the butt. How much load it takes to bend the rod is a separate rating, power. Makers rate both on their own scales.1 2 3 4 5 6

What is a blank?

The blank is the rod's main structural length. Its construction helps determine how much it bends and where the bend develops.1

What does rod action mean?

Action is where along the blank a rod bends when it is loaded; power, a separate rating, is how much load it takes to bend it.1 2 3 A fast action puts the first bend near the tip; a slower action lets the bend run further down the blank.1 2 3

In the explorer, set a moderate load, then move Action and leave Power where it is. Watch where the bend starts, not only how far the tip drops. Under a heavier load, more of a real blank bends.

Read the whole rod label

A label such as Medium / Fast gives two ratings: Medium is the power and Fast is the action. What those labels mean varies between makers and rod series, so compare the line and lure ranges printed beside them.1 4 5 6 The chart below gives the usual descriptions, and the power explorer shows the other rating on its own.

What is the difference between rod action and rod power?: Action is where the blank flexes; power is how much load it takes to flex it.1 2 3
What does fast action mean on a fishing rod?: A fast-action rod initially concentrates more bend toward the tip. More of the blank can bend as the load increases, so “fast” does not mean the lower rod can never flex.1 2 3
Is a fast action rod stiffer?: Not necessarily. Action describes where it bends; stiffness under load is power, rated separately and differently by each maker.1 2 3 4 5 6
