Spincast vs baitcast

A push-button spincast, an open spinning reel and a baitcaster, run through the same cast.

A push-button spincast reel lets line leave a spool that stays still under a cover. A baitcaster frees its spool to turn, so the brakes and your thumb have to control its speed. An open spinning reel also casts from a still spool, with a bail in place of the cover.1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14

Spincast reel

Holding the button retracts the pickup pin; releasing it lets line leave the fixed spool in coils through the nose hole.1

Why it works this way

The spool stays stationary during the cast, so rotating-spool overrun does not apply.1 2 3

Turning the handle spins the pin head around the fixed spool; the pin catches the line and winds it on under the cover.1

The pin head is the spincast reel's rotor: it revolves, the spool does not.1 2 3 4

Spinning reel

Bail open: line leaves the fixed spool in coils over its lip. No part of the reel turns.13 14

Why it works this way

Because the spool is fixed, the cast needs nothing to spin; the coils are why the first rod guide is large.13 14 16

Turning the handle spins the rotor around the fixed spool; the line roller carries line onto the spool while the spool moves in and out.2 3 4

Baitcast reel

Why it works this way

This is the mechanism that differs from a spinning reel: the spool itself revolves to pay out line.2 3 4 5 6 7

Turning the handle re-engages the clutch and turns the spool; the level wind walks the line across it.2 5

The spool is driven through the gears, so the ratio is spool turns per handle turn here, not rotor turns.3 4 5 6 7 9 17 18

The lure has slowed but the spool is still turning: line lifts off in loose loops that pile on the spool.6 9 11 12

Is a spincast reel the same as a baitcaster?

No: they release line in opposite ways. On a push-button spincast, you press and hold the button, then let go to let line run out from a spool that stays still; turning the handle brings the pickup back into play to wind line on.1 A baitcaster’s thumb bar frees a spool that then has to turn.4 5 6 7

Where the spinning reel fits

An open spinning reel casts from a still spool too: with the bail open, line leaves over the lip and nothing in the reel needs to turn.13 14 A bail and roller take the place of the covered pickup, so the spinning reel sits with the spincast on the still-spool side of this comparison.

An underspin reel is a spincast-style covered reel mounted under the rod and released with a lever or trigger.9 15
