Parts of a fishing rod

A rod is a flexible blank with guides that carry line to the tip top, and a handle (grips, reel seat and butt cap) where the reel clamps on. Casting rods add a trigger under the seat; only rods that come apart have a ferrule.12345678

What are the parts of a fishing rod?

A rod is a flexible blank with guides that carry the line to the tip, and a handle with a reel seat where the reel clamps on.458 The numbers on the drawings run from tip to butt, while the line runs the other way: off the reel, through the first guide and the running guides, and out through the tip top.

How the guides share the load

The guides spread a pull along the whole blank instead of leaving the load at the tip.4 On a spinning rod, the large first guide also gathers the coils coming off the reel.5 Trace the line path before you try the practice round.

Parts your rod may not have

The ferrule is the joint between sections, so a one-piece rod has none.127 These drawings show two-piece rods with a full set of fittings. Some rods have no foregrip311, and not every rod has a hook keeper.

Seat and grips

The reel seat clamps the reel foot to the rod; the grips are the parts you hold, in front of it and behind it.45 On a casting rod the trigger sits under the seat. The rod comparison puts both layouts one above the other.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between the guides on a spinning rod and a casting rod?
Spinning guides generally run below the blank and start with a larger guide to gather coils. The casting layout shown has smaller guides above the blank. Guide count varies with rod length and design.56
What is the reel seat on a fishing rod?
The fitting that secures the reel foot to the rod. The examples use hoods tightened by a locking ring; other reel-seat designs differ.45
What does the ferrule do?
It is the joint where the sections of a multi-piece rod fit together.127
Which part of the rod sets its action and power?
