What is a baitcaster?

Step through a cast on a low-profile baitcaster and watch the spool.

A baitcaster is a reel whose spool turns to let line out and to wind it back in. On a typical low-profile baitcaster, a thumb bar frees the spool for the cast, and spool tension, brakes and your thumb control its speed. Baitcast reel

Why it works this way

Until the thumb bar is pressed, the spool is locked to the gears; only a pull stronger than the drag can turn it.1

Why it works this way

The spool keeps turning as line runs out. Spool tension and the brakes slow it, which helps keep it from turning faster than line leaves.2 5 6 7

Why it works this way

Tension acts at the spool shaft; the brake acts on spool speed during the cast. They are separate controls.2 5 6 7

Turning the handle re-engages the clutch and turns the spool; the level wind walks the line across it.1 16

A pull above the star-drag setting turns the spool backwards against the drag while the handle stays still.1 11 20

The drag sits between the handle and the spool drive, so the spool can yield without the handle turning.1 11

What is a baitcaster reel?

A baitcaster is a reel whose spool turns: it spins to let line out on the cast, and the handle turns it back through the gears.1 2 3 4 On a spinning reel, by contrast, line peels off the end of a spool that stays still.

Because the spool turns, your thumb can feather it during a cast and stop it as the lure lands.1 2 4 12 13 That is also why a baitcaster needs setting up: a spool that keeps turning faster than line leaves can pile loose loops on the reel.2 6 12 13

Round or low-profile

Baitcasters come with round or low-profile bodies.10 11 The low-profile example in the lab shows the thumb bar, spool and level wind clearly; the turning spool, not the body shape, is what makes it a baitcaster.
